Anti-Racism and Equity Institute Builds on 麻豆视频最新最全鈥檚 History of Activism鈥

The year 2020 saw the rise of Asian Hate and鈥痶he killings of Black Americans, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and鈥疉hmaud鈥疉rbery, all of which were complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, sparking movements across the country that continue to shape society today. 麻豆视频最新最全 University is stepping forward to鈥痗ontribute to鈥痶his societal change.鈥&苍产蝉辫;鈥 

Last Spring, the 麻豆视频最新最全 University Board of Trustees approved the Anti-Racism and Equity Institute. This institute creates an important interdisciplinary hub for faculty, students,鈥痵taff鈥痑nd community members engaged in race and anti-racism scholarship, activism and education. The 麻豆视频最新最全 Board of Trustees anticipates that the institute will elevate 麻豆视频最新最全 to be an鈥痚xemplar in race scholarship and community engagement.

鈥溌槎故悠底钚伦钊 is a university that is known for its activism,鈥 Director of the Anti-Racism and Equity Institute Carla Goar, Ph.D., said. 鈥淎fter the summer of 2020, we asked, 鈥榃hat can universities do? What can 麻豆视频最新最全 do to move anti-racist work forward?鈥 One option was to create a space that would support and amplify the good work that faculty, staff, and students are doing here to advance anti-racist work.鈥 

With more than 100 faculty and staff expressing interest in its mission, The Anti-Racism and Equity Institute鈥痺ill provide support for researchers and opportunities for collaboration across multiple departments,鈥痗olleges鈥痑nd campuses.  The institute鈥檚 programs will eventually include a faculty鈥痜ellows鈥痯rogram, visiting professionals in residence, annual symposia and speaker events, graduate and undergraduate student scholarships and a competitive seed grant program,鈥痑s announced in a statement provided by the university in March 2021.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

The first year鈥痮f the institute will be a year of building, with a priority of recruiting members from both within and outside of the university, according to Goar.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淲e hope to have faculty, staff, students and community members working together, promoting community research,鈥 Goar said. 鈥淚deally this institute will serve as a hub for scholars and activists to come together to tackle issues and racial equity. We want to make sure the鈥痠nstitute鈥痠s beneficial for all people.鈥濃 

As part of the educational mission of the institute,鈥痶he Institute will offer a special topics course in the spring called The Tulsa Project鈥(SOC 42095) that鈥痺ill focus on the rise and destruction of鈥疶ulsa鈥檚 Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street. The course will compare the area鈥檚 socio-historical context of 1921鈥痺ith the racial context of 2021, with a focus on anti-racist planning and community (re)building.  

The class鈥痺ill be informed by鈥痩iterature鈥痠n sociology, political science, public鈥痟ealth鈥痑nd records produced by the University of Tulsa, the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission and the Tulsa Historical Society.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

In the future, the Institute hopes to offer funding to students who are engaged in anti-racism scholarship and activism.
